Two orphans, a girl named Nguyen Thi Ha and boy named Phan Van Quang (in striped shirt), hold a rabbit that is helping provide additional income at the Thien An Social Protection Institution outside of Can Tho City, Vietnam, for orphans. Director of the Institution, Rose Tran Bach Yen says, “We pride our children here with stabilization of life both mentally and physically. Heifer Vietnam has helped our situation by setting up an animal farm as well as vocational training for our children.�

Fred Sarilla with his cow in the village of Bugcaon and Lantapan in the Philippines, where Sarilla takes part in a Heifer community group that calls itself the Cooperative of Poor Farmers. Sarilla said, “I am expressing from deep in my heart. I compare what we did not have to what we now have with this cow. Before we ploughed by hand and fee with sweat and what we produced was with our hands and carried on our heads. Now we have a cart. I ride with my wife and children and are talking with joy because we are riding. I will never forget the opportunity and Heifer International for our animal. .. My heart gives more thanks than you will ever know.� (2003)

Prem Kumari, in Tharu native costume, and her water buffalo pose in the village of Belsi, in southern Nepal, where incomes average less than $300 a year. Prem Kumari says, “The situation in our village was very bad but once our group was formed, we learned many things. The tremendous changes that have taken place in our community makes us feel that we have achieved much in life.�

Suoy O and his small baby, Sun Sal, in the District of Veal Veng, Cambodia, pose near their home next to their cow, which is in a roomy zero-grazing enclosure. Suoy O says, “During the Khmer Rouge fighting, I ran over a landmine while running to escape. A friend took me to a fort and then troops took me to a hospital where I realized I lost my leg. I still worry about landmines because they are buried only 70 meters away from my house. We must garden there because there is not enough land for us to cultivate enough food for my family. Since receiving our cow, we hope our lives will change.�

Gyatri Adhikari is a member of a Heifer women’s group in the village of Astam, Nepal. Gyatri says, “Before the formation of our group, men used to believe women could do nothing but today, the men have progressed as well and are treating us equally. They have started appreciating our work along with supporting the poorer members and lower caste.�

Yorn Sokhan poses with a family pig outside on the pagodas in her village in the Prah Nethprah District of Cambodia. This area in Cambodia was along the border with Thailand and was devastated during many years of fighting. Lives were disrupted, homes destroyed, livestock decimated and food resources ruined. Heifer targeted three of the poorest villages in the district to assist in pig husbandry to restore the livelihoods of the villagers. (2002)
